does bigger mean better?
SO it is now more than official… PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN’S CHEST is the big hit of the summer and might just make more than every movie in the history of cinema put together. The stunts are bigger, the characters are zanier, the effects are more impressive and more plentiful, and the budget is ranks among the biggest of all time (220 – 250 million depending on who you listen to). The real question is, “how is the movie?”
In my opinion, PIRATES 2 is a lesser film when compared to the first one. I know that it is bigger and more and all of that, but that is exactly why it is not as good. First is the action scenes…
In the PIRATES 1, there was action and it was motivated by the story and the characters. Because of both of these things, the action was fun and engaging. We wanted Captain Jack Sparrow to escape and had a blast watching him wiggle out of tough spot after tough spot. In PIRATES 2, the story came out of the action. It felt like the writers started with about 5 big set piece action scenes and developed a story to connect the set pieces. Because of this, the action was not engaging and felt like separate pieces, not a whole movie. Was it impressive? Hell yeah. The action is well done and impressive, but I was still not drawn in on a story level.
The character of Jack Sparrow was what had everyone talking after the first film, so when it came to bringing him back for a sequel, they tried to make him bigger and better. What they did was make him beyond cartoonish. Depp walked a fine line in the first film of fun and silly and realistic. This time around, the character can’t even see where the line is anymore. Is he fun? Sure, but he is not the character that I was rooting for in the first installment. The other characters also wanted more to do, so there are action scenes and “big moments” for Bloom and Knightly, but that just weighs the story down and makes the two and a half hour running time feel longer. When everyone gets their moment, there may be just too many moments.
The effects in PIRATES 1 really surprised me and impressed me. The effects in the second one simply knocked me on my ass. The effects work on Davey Jones alone are some of the most impressive visual effects that I have seen. They rank up there with the effects work with KING KONG last year and this film is almost guaranteed the Oscar for that department. WOW!
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN’S CHEST is a fun film, don’t get me wrong. It is, however, about 30 minutes too long and gets carried away in trying to be “bigger and better” than the first. I wish they would have spent a little more time with the story and the writing and a little less time planning the “big moments”. If you try too hard, you can easily fail. PIRATES 2 is not a failure, but I really wanted it to be better than it was. That being said, I am still excited for the third installment next May.

Well the new super man was around 400 million, now that is what i hear. but i did hear that it was the most expensive movie ever made. But i would rather see pirates!
I agree with you wholeheartedly that Pirates 1 was better than Pirates 2, though I had tons of fun at both of them .. My main beef with No. 2 was that it was way too long
