SUNDANCE 2006: kinky boots
Charlie Price (Joel Edgerton) inherits his fathers shoe factory and has to find a way to save the family business. KINKY BOOTS is another in a line of British comedies along the likes of FULL MONTY, BILLY ELLIOTT, THE ENGLISHMAN WHO WENT UP A HILL AND CAME DOWN A MOUNTAIN and CALANDAR GIRLS. It is a really cute film that will win you over and have you tapping your feet by the end. What makes this one a little different is the performance by Chiwetel Ejiofor as Lola, the singing/dancing drag queen.
When Lola and Charlie team up to save the shoe factory by creating a functional and sexy shoe for drag queens, the stage is set and the fun begins. Along with being cute, this movie has a lot of heart. There are reoccurring themes of tolerance and love.
KINKY BOOTS is not a great movie by any means, but the audience here loved it. By the time we got to the finale, all you had to do is look around to see that everyone was tapping their foot to the music. It had them… hook line and sinker. This movie will be released in theaters and if you liked any of the movies that I mentioned above, you will enjoy this one. Even if you didn’t, it is worth it for Chiwetel Ejiofor. He sings. He dances. He dresses up in women’s clothes… and he’s damn good at it. Every year we seem to get “this year’s FULL MONTY”… KINKY BOOTS is that film for 2006.

The movie is a fun way to spend a couple hours. The last 10 minutes are easily worth the price of the ticket. Lola's version of "These Boots..." stomps all over Jessica Simpson's effort.
