2005 HUMBY'S: technical awards

These are my choices for the best of the year in regards to the categories that compose the academy awards. There are awards that I don’t include, such as short films, sound effects editing, documentary, foreign language film and so on…

The first part of my list will be for the technical categories…

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
2046

Wong Kar Wai is known for the beauty of his films and this is no exception. Working once again with his frequent collaberater Christopher Doyle, he has created maybe his most stunning film. The use of color and the stellar composition stands out as the best in film this year. Photography is almost a character in a Wong Kar Wai film. watching one of his films, I am reminded of some of the great visual directors of all time (Kubrick, Lean, Leone, Mallick, and so on) who all put such a strong emphasis on the look of a film. Cinema is a visual medium and 2046 reaffirms Wong Kar Wai as a master filmmaker.

other nominees (yes i know i have 10, but it was a great year for cinematography):
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
THE CONSTANT GARDNER
GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK
JARHEAD
LAST DAYS
MUNICH
NEW WORLD
SIN CITY
SYRIANA

BEST EDITING
2046

Once again, 2046 stands out among the competition for me. This is a complex emotional tale and one that is extremely well put together. The film jumps back and forth in time and never once is it too confusing or overly complicated. Editing is not all about quick cuts and gimmicks, but is more about pace, rhythm and maintaining an emotional connection with the audience. It is one of the most powerful (and invisible) parts of filmmaking and 2046 is an excellent example of that.

other nominees:
CONSTANT GARDNER
JARHEAD
MUNICH
SYRIANA

BEST COSTUME
NEW WORLD

Best costume is often given to a period piece and this is a great example of why… The costumes of both the Europeans and the Native Americans are so unique and felt so real that it put you in the movie. The costumes and the art direction made the movie feel realistic. You just believed it and were free to focus on the film.

other nominees:
2046
BREAKFAST ON PLUTO
KINGDOM OF HEAVEN
MUNICH

BEST MAKE-UP
SIN CITY

I didn’t realize the amount or the extent of the make-up in SIN CITY until I watched the DVD. The make-up was integral to the look of the film. Creating the visually unique black and white comic book look was the stand out part of this great film. This look was a combination of the photography, visual effects and the make-up. A few of the highlights to look for are the characters of the “YELLOW BASTARD” and “MARV”.

other nominees:
BATMAN BEGINS
CONSTANTINE
THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE
HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE

BEST ART DIRECTION
NEW WORLD

My reasons for this are similar to why I chose NEW WORLD for best costumes. The world that was created just felt so real. The recreations of the colonies and London were breathtaking. While a good deal of this film took place in and around nature, it was the sets that were created that really sold the time period and authenticity. Beautiful film top to bottom.

other nominees:
2046
THE CONSTANT GARDNER
GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK
SIN CITY

BEST SCORE
2046

The music is haunting, beautiful and I haven’t stopped listening to the score since I saw the film in June. The music is such and integral part of the film as it usually is with Wong Kar Wai. The themes are repetitious, but not in the slightest bit annoying and distracting. The music is so wonderfully written and orchestrated that you could just listen to it on a loop. I knew as soon as I saw this film that the score would be my favorite of the year.

other nominees:
KING KONG
MR. & MRS. SMITH
MUNICH
NEW WORLD

BEST SOUND
KING KONG

There is a lot that goes into the sound of the movie. The most noticeable is the big loud parts of a film. KING KONG did big and loud better than any other film this year. It was the little touches that put this one over the top for me though. The quiet sounds of the movement in the jungle… everything felt alive. Special mention goes out to the sounds that added to the creation on the character of Kong. Along with the visuals, the sound turned Kong into a real and sympathetic character. Much of the emotion that he exhibited was portrayed through the noises that he made. That is good sound design.

other nominees:
BATMAN BEGINS
CONSTANTINE
JARHEAD
SIN CITY

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS
KING KONG

The creation of Kong is one of the most amazing things that I have ever seen on screen. He is a fully realized, emotional character that delivers a great performance and is entirely computer generated. This is one of the landmark achievements in special effects. Special mention must be made to the Kong vs T-Rex sequence of the film. it is almost entirely CG and is one of the best action sequences I have ever seen. In my mind, this choice is a no brainer… there is no real compatition.

other nominees:
2046
BATMAN BEGINS
KUNG FU HUSTLE
SIN CITY
