SUNDANCE 2006: who killed the electric car?
In 1990 the state of California passed a mandate to fight the amount of pollution that was being dumped into the atmosphere. This bill required that 2% of California vehicles be emission free by 1998 and 10% by 2003. The introduction of the EV-1 (a zero emission car by General Motors) made this a possibility. This car war fast, efficient, sleek, and ran completely on electricity, producing no emissions.
Why, then… in 2006, there is no more EV-1’s on the road?
WHO KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR?
That is the question that this movie asks. The answers that are uncovered are surprising and infuriating. ELECTRIC CAR has been attacked for being ultra liberal, but I think that it does a pretty good job of trying to maintain neutrality.
After explaining the history of the electric car and the elimination of the car, the movie looks at who might be to blame…
THE CAR COMPANIES?
THE GOVERNMENT?
FAULTY BATTERIES?
THE OIL COMPANIES?
THE CALIFORNIA AIR RESOURCES BOARD?
THE CONSUMERS?
All of these possibilities are looked into thoroughly and what is uncovered in an outrage. We are left feeling as if there is no hope and thinking that there is no chance for a clean future.
One of the things that I liked most about WHO KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR? Is that it didn’t end there. There is hope and that is where the movie left off. There is more than just hope and there is something that we can all do. This is not just a movie about what is wrong; it is a call to action. And you know what?
It works.
